As a foreigner, I think I can give my viewpoint:

Here in the west, Russia is viewed as either the following:

    - Middle eastern like government rule where people are forced out of their homes and arrested.
    - Hates gays and forces gays to convert
    - Tyrannical
    - Undeveloped
    - extremely poor
    - extremely uneducated
    - communist
    - technologically inclined.

The problem with western people, is that even with the advent of internet, they cannot view anything outside of their spectrum. That said, rarely do people engage in anything other than what they read, and unfortunately for many readers, there is no real news coming from Russia that is in English, and the ones that do? it is quickly disqualified as "propaganda". People like to believe a fairy tail about how Russia is continuously falling apart and people are unhappy there.

I always try to bring the point to others that Russia isn't quite what they think it is. There are of course bad aspects, but there are plenty of good aspects too. For instance, Russians are viewed as poor because of GDP per capita, but I have to remind them that average Russian debt is almost none existent, while average Canadian for an example has $200,000 or more in debt (average home is a nightmare in price) and cost of living is almost on par with each other for other things. So technically, Russians can be further ahead than average Canadian. The other thing that is mentioned a lot is the crime and how the government acts tyrannical. I always point out to them that crime may be more prevalent in Russia, but they also have a lot of people of various ethnicities, some bring good and some do not. As well, there are more Russian's than there are of Canadians, thus of course numbers may increase in terms of crime. That, and we too have our crime in the west. Anyone see the Vancouver riots? Really sad. As for politicians being corrupt, that is true. That is also true here. Corruption is a problem everywhere, it is just some people are better at hiding it than others. Like the RCMP officer who shot a guy in the back of the head. Or the fact that majority of our prime ministers end up on corruption charge after they finished ruling.

Any news about Russia from US, Canada, UK, etc are usually just about bad things, and usually, what is told is mostly slanted. Like the gay protest in Moscow and St.Petersburg, are two examples as to how the west will definitely make it look like that they are dragging gays from their homes and arresting/beating them.

Generally, a lot of westerners fall victim to the media and what is being portrayed. Many people are inherently stupid and believe what they want to believe, and regardless what evidence you bring to them to prove them wrong, an ignorant will always stay ignorant.

That is why I think it is best in Russia and Russian's interest to do what they must to help their own country out. The ones who run away are usually the same type to bitch about the same stupid things I listed, and are usually fell victim of propaganda and or their own stupidity. A loser in one country is a loser in another.

What really needs to be done, is an english driven web space of the exact same thing as Sdelanounas, and promote it publicly, as that could help Russia's image. News corporations are usually in someones pocket. Of all the news outlets in America, only 6 companies control them. So you can figure out quite quickly how slanted the news can really get here.

It's very sad because these things do more distance between russians and foreigners though I know several persons from the USA and I know what a wonderful these people. @Propaganda" and stereotypes make us aliens but we must change this situation.

Unfortunatelly it's typical situation around the world. There are many the same people in Russia.

But he is looser in the "best" country! The best from the worsts!
